It all started at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. When the owner of a small mom and pop pizza place told me all about his new house, his two young kids and his loving wife. They all loved eating pizza and he loved making pizza for them! But the Great Recession (2007-2009) had left him in a hard place. He was getting ready to file for bankruptcy and he was afraid to lose his house.
You're selling pizza in a town surrounded by 50,000+ college students...
Together with a few peers, we took pictures of the sweet young girls in front of their house throwing pizza dough up in the air. We made postcards and social media posts with this precious picture and a caption to remember: "This is not a charity. Just order pizza from us. Keep these kids in their house!"
It went "viral" before viral was a thing. In no time, demand was booming and profits grew! Within 3 years of the original campaign, this small town pizza shop opened their THIRD location just to keep up with demand.
